A 34-year-old woman has had a swollen, warm, tender left calf for three days, 4 cm bigger round than the right. There has been no long journey, no surgery, no immobility, and no cast. At 29 she had the same thing in the other leg; it was put down to the contraceptive pill, which she stopped, and she has not taken it since.
