A 19-year-old man in his second week of basic training is carried into the field medical tent by two members of his section, about forty minutes into a ten-kilometre loaded march. He is awake and talking, which is what reassures everyone at first. It should not. He has asked where his kit is three times in the space of a minute, each time as though for the first time, and he cannot say what day it is.
