A 68-year-old has had four days of pain he describes as burning and stabbing at once, running as a band from the left side of his spine round to his breastbone. Walking does not bring it on and sitting still does not take it away. He has been sleeping on his right side because he cannot bear his shirt touching that strip of skin.
