A 61-year-old driving instructor who has taught for thirty years has cut his teaching day from eight lessons to three and has quietly stopped taking pupils out on fast roads. Three generations of learners have nicknamed his dual-control hatchback Rocinante, and for the first time in thirty years it spends its afternoons parked on the drive. It has crept up over about five months, with no day he can point to as the start. His wife booked the appointment after watching him reverse into the drive using only the mirrors. He looks fit and well, and is mainly impatient to get his diary back.
